The Human powered tea and toast stall or as we sometimes like to call it ‘Extreme Tea’ is a really fun and interactive way of demonstrating that it takes a LOT of energy to heat water. To achieve this we setup 10 bicycles each with their own electricity generator. We also setup a couple of tag-a-longs so that younger children can also get involved. Everyone has to pedal hard for a few minutes to boil one cup of water. We then share the tea (decaffeinated for kids) with everyone that contributed, it’ll be the sweetest cup of tea or tastiest toast they ever tasted!
This is a great way to educate the audience on just how much energy is involved in making electricity. Anyone who has pedalled for a cup of tea, will experience a sense of wonder each time they flick the switch on their domestic kettle. Hopefully it inspires people only to boil the water they need!
